Dear Colleagues,

Mental health is an important component of overall health and those responsible and tasked with helping the community in improving their mental health include all mental health workers, including Psychiatrists, Doctors, Clinical Psychologists, Counselors, Traditional and Complementary Practitioners, Occupational Therapists, Nurses and Carers. Various NGO’s are involved in the process of providing support and care for those with mental disorders as well.

The Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society is organising the 8th Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society Conference with the theme, “Making Mental Health a priority for Healthy Ageing”. It will be held from the 31st of March to the 2nd of April, 2016 at the Royale Bintang Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This conference is looking at a holistic approach to mental health issues affecting our society and so is open to all Mental Health Workers including, Psychiatrists, Doctors, Clinical Psychologists, Counselors, Traditional and Complementary Practitioners, Occupational Therapists, Nurses and Carers.

We have two Keynote Speakers at this conference including, Prof Dr. Helen Herrman (President Elect, World Psychiatric Association) who will speak on “Improving mental health for women and girls in adversity” as well as Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye who will address “Promoting Mental Health at the Workplace for better Productivity”. There will also be free paper sessions with attractive prizes for the best three papers presented. Some of the other areas that the conference will cover include, Psychological Aspects in Disaster Relief, Psychological Support of Carers (Family & Caregivers), Elderly Abuse & Neglect and Multidisciplinary Approach to Mental Health in the Community.

The Organising Committee has worked hard to make this conference a meaningful and educative event. Our supporters include, The World Psychiatric Association, Malaysian Psychiatric Association, Mental Health Association of Malaysia, Global Coalition on Ageing among others.Consider being part of this important event as a delegate and register yourself for this conference.

Overview of the Conference

Mental health is an important component and contributor to Healthy Ageing. Mental health promotion and prevention should really be starting among children and adolescents if we want our population that is ageing to have a better quality of life and be more productive. Those who do suffer from mental illness can recover and need not suffer in silence.

Special populations such as women and children in adversity require more mental health support as they become more vulnerable to mental disorders. People suffering from addictions too deserve evidence based medical modalities of treatment that are effective. These services should be available and accessible both in private and public healthcare services. With lack of emphasis and poor health insurance coverage this is a real challenge in Malaysia.

This Conference hopes to highlight the importance of ‘Making Mental Health a Priority for Healthy Ageing’. It brings together experts from abroad and locally to discuss important areas of mental health disorders and delivery. It hopes to educate and empower healthcare and policy makers to better improve mental health services and thus ensure Health Ageing in Malaysia.
